Join the ACLU of Michigan Southwest Branch and the Kalamazoo Public Library for this year's Banned Books Readout and art contest. Hear local celebrities read passages from this year's selection of banned or challenged books and take a look at original art inspired by this year's selections.

Throughout its history, the ACLU has fought to protect countless books -- including Harry Potter, To Kill a Mocking Bird and Tropic of Cancer -- from censorship. Each year the ACLU celebrates Banned Books Week, a reminder of how precious our First Amendment rights are and how dangerous -- and un-American -- censorship is.

Enter the 2010 Banned Books Art Contest!

Artists are invited to create original art inspired by one of the following five frequently challenged or banned books:

  • Uncle Bobby’s Wedding by Sarah S. Brannen
  • The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
  • To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
  • TTYL by Lauren Myracle

Art contest entries will be featured during the October 1 Art Hop reception at the library to celebrate Banned Books Week, September 25 - October 2. Local personalities will read from the five books. Contest winners will be announced during the event.

Eligibility

Contest open to artists residing in southwest Michigan. Artwork should be submitted in one of two categories: Adult, artists over the age of 18 years; or Student, artists in grades 7-12.

Artwork

Artists may enter one original artwork in any medium, not to exceed 3 feet in any dimension. No direct copies of existing artwork, photos, or graphics will be accepted.

Awards

First Place cash prizes: $500 to the Adult winner and $150 to the Student winner. One Honorable Mention and one People’s Choice (both non-cash prizes) will also be awarded in each category. Winners will be on the ACLU and KPL websites following the contest.

Display of Entries

Artworks will be displayed on the Kalamazoo Public Library’s first floor from October 1-8. Please mat, frame, or mount 2-D work so it may be placed on table top easels. All 3-D work must be sturdy and able to be handled and moved safely. Securely attach an ID label to the back of your entry.

Delivery of Entries and Submission Deadline

Entries must be received by mail no later than Wednesday, September 29. Hand-delivered entries will be accepted Wednesday, September 29, or Thursday, September 30, between 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Kalamazoo Public Library, 315 S. Rose St.

Liability

Work is submitted at owner’s risk. Although every precaution will be taken, the ACLU and KPL are not responsible for artwork while on library premises. The ACLU and KPL reserve the right to refuse any entry and to withdraw any work from the exhibition.

Return of Entries

Pick up artwork on Wednesday, October 13, between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Entries not picked up by deadline may be disposed of unless arrangements are made in advance.
